The Empowered Nurturer
A Daedal Leader
The Virtuosic Manager

By Maja B. Demandante

Dr. Merian S. Magallanes, Dean of the College of Business Administration.

Looking back at the maiden years of joining Capiz State University (CapSU), Dr. Merian Magallanes described it as the challenging years of her career and at the same time one of the turning points in her life. Who wouldn’t be? A simple but strong driven woman from a casual clerk position rose to the top level management with ardent work and perseverance to empower herself and be the current Dean of the College of Business and Management. On a personal note, it made me ponder quite a bit (and a bit more… because she is a big wig in the academe) upon knowing that I will be interviewing a formidable leader from one of the performing colleges in CapSU Burias Campus. Interestingly, I have slowly unfolded on the course of our interview the intricate beauty and strength of an empowered woman who are polished by wisdom thru time.
Yes. Cliché it may be, but Dr. Merian is one of those brave hearts who started from scratch and had worked her way up to what she is now despite numerous adversities along the way. Surprisingly, she continued to pursue for higher education after her son completed his bachelor’s degree. It simply proves that the fire of hunger for knowledge, to widen one’s horizon, and to improve oneself does not necessarily come together with, nor equated with age and gender. As Dr. Merian related her story with a smile and fulfilment; “I attended school (bachelor course) late and was quite older than the rest of my classmates. But mind you, it didn’t bother me a bit (and she smiled) because I have a strong personality and petty things are least of my concerns.”
When asked about what has been her life and career like being part of the university, she quoted: “Being a dean has many ups and downs but I am a STRONG PERSON though often dubbed as “maldita” (chuckled). Yet, it doesn’t make me a lesser person as I consider most criticisms and negativities with silver lining and turn these as constructive remarks to do better and bolder. Indeed, it made me recall the premise that “being maldita in a positive context is simply smartness that others can’t handle”.
Consequently, she asserted that the significant contributions she is most proud of is fulfilling her administrative duties, though complains and indifferences are inevitable, but she dares to take risks when needed because it is part of being passionate on teaching, helping others, and facilitating to get things done both in the academe and managerial functions. These have changed her in a way of facilitating the needs of the people in her rank and file and the students in the college per se. “I am motivated to facilitate the needs of my colleagues to get the work done on time and exert extra effort to meet what has been listed and required for us. The same it goes with the DPA and MPA graduate students wherein I get to be a cashier, registrar, consultant, and running errands for them at times – a nurturing mother of college at some point perhaps.”
Recently, Capiz State University – College of Business Management programs BS Business Administration and BS Entrepreneurship were given by the Commission on Higher Education a Certificate of Compliance (COC), the Doctorate Program in Public Administration has passed the level II accreditation, and the Master in Public Administration Program has been granted the Level III – Phase I accreditation, too. A few of the many glorious achievements of CapSU Burias that pushed the university a notch higher in delivering quality education for all and a legacy on the part of Dr. Magallanes as the mother and guiding force behind load work to rally the College of Business and Management  towards advancement.
Asked about the wisdom or thought she would like to share, Dr. Magallanes smiled and said: “Soon enough, I will be retiring but I would like people to remember me as a fighter, a strong driven woman who does her job well despite being underestimated once in her life. I live with the maxim - be strong and treat other equally because intelligence has different facets. Its lustre is dependent on one’s character and strength.  So, just do your job and if you can work today, why wait for tomorrow?” // Laureate

SCHOOL FIRE SAFETY
By:  NOEL MAXIMO, FO1

Fire is the visible effect of the process of combustion – a special type of chemical reaction. It occurs between oxygen in the air and some sort of fuel. The products from the chemical reaction are completely different from the starting material. Fire are called friendly, but it can also give nightmare if you are not careful with it. Here are some tips on what to do in case of fire in school.

WHAT TO DO IN CASE OF FIRE:
· Establish a fire safety plan.
· Evacuate students in immediate danger.
· Sound the alarm.
· Perform any fire drill duties assign to you.
· Fight the fires with the proper equipment only if you are not putting yourself or anyone else in   danger. DO NOT FIGHT the fire if it is spreading rapidly or blocking your exit. If you do not know how to use the fire equipment, leave the building immediately.
· Close room doors and hallway doors to prevent air movement and spread of smoke.
· DO NOT PANIC. Advise students that the fire plan is in operation and remain calm. Your confidence and judgement is extremely important and will prevent panic.

FIRE DRILLS:
· Always take school fire drills seriously, and evacuate the school when the alarm sounds.
· Hold fire drills on a regular basis. Have the initial fire drill for the school year in early September.
· Ensure the school employees know how to evacuate their work areas and perform their fire drill duties in an emergency.
· Always sound the alarm at the first sign of smoke or fire.
· Be familiar the location of the nearest fire alarm and extinguisher.
· Learn how to operate fire extinguisher, fire blankets and fire house. Your fire department is available to provide instructions and demonstrations.

LABORATORIES:
· Store flammable liquids properly and dispense them from an approved safety container.
· Avoid storing incompatible chemicals next to each other an interaction may occur and cause a fire or explosion.
· Survey chemicals annually and discard any that are obsolete or show sign of decomposition.
· Order store the minimum supply necessary.
· Clean up spills immediately.
· Repair all electrical hazards and avoid overloading outlets.
· Dispose of rubbish regularly and in proper manner.
· Keep MSDS’s readily available.
CLASSROMS:
· Keep combustible material away from heaters.
· Avoid portable heaters.
· Clearly mark the evacuation route on the school floor plan, and place it adjacent to the classroom door.
· Check electrical appliances and cords regularly, and disconnect appliances where practical.
· Keep all doorways clear.
· Dispose of rubbish daily.
· Protect all unused outlets in kindergarten and preschool nurseries with safety plugs.
· Do not use candles or similar open flames in classrooms.

GYMNASUIM/AUDITORIUM:
· Check emergency lighting monthly
· Keep all doorways clear.
· Keep exit lights in working order.
· Extension cords should not be used as a replacement for permanent wiring.

INDUSTRIAL ARTS/INDUSTRIALTEHNOLOGY:
· Electrical outlets and frayed cords can cause burns and shocked. Avoid overloading outlets and used approved extension cords only on a temporary basis.
· Secure compressed gas cylinders in an upright position. Avoid dropping, rolling or knocking them together.
· Never wield in areas where combustible material is stored
· Keep work area clean and check daily for fire hazards.
· Provide suitable waste can for disposal of oil soaked and paints rags.
· Use safety cans for storing and dispensing small amount of flammable liquids.
· Ensure good ventilation for painting operations and a regular routine for cleaning up overspray residues.
· Supply suitable and easily accessible fire extinguishers.

OFFICE AND STORAGE AREAS:
· Avoid overloading electrical outlets and keep wiring away from doorways, windows or under carpeting.
· Carefully store and handle cleaning compounds and polishes (they often give off flammable vapors).
· Ensure general order and cleanliness in storage rooms.

HALLS AND DOORWAYS:
· Identify exits with lighted signs and keep them unobstructed.
· Avoid wedging open hallway doors.

ALS Symposium on Responsible Use of Information Technology and Desirable Behavior on Peers and in Higher Education Institutions: An educator’s perspective.
By REVIC C. FREBALDOS, Ed.D. Student

Information Technology includes but is not limited to desktop computers, workstations, network servers, mainframe computers, software, digital information and voice, video, and data networks, including official College pages on social networking sites.
As time passes, technology follows the up curve in the progress graph. It is not anymore a hidden fact that technology has made life of human being comfortable. Today’s learners have the innate ability to easily navigate and use the Web. The Internet has evolved into a “participatory culture,” allowing students to create, connect, and collaborate with a global audience.Educators need to think of ways to train today’s generation to be responsible and ethical life-long learners of the digital age. Teachers must demonstrate, guide, and help students practice appropriate and professional behavior while actively participating in authentic learning experiences using blogs, wiki spaces, learning management systems, online research, and much more.
First, I must commend the lecturers for a job well done on providing us with the experience and knowledge needed to complete the symposium.  It was very challenging on the part of the ALS learners on how to use responsibly the technology, and with their diligence and perseverance, the symposium was successful.   They have heared that technology helps provide them with easy access to information via the Internet that before involved trips to libraries. In addition, this access to information can be free to students, by utilizing resources such as Wikipedia in a responsible fashion. Technology can also be a gateway to the vast realms of creativity for students, allowing them to participate in activities that they never would have dreamed possible. For example, students can create their own websites/blogs from scratch, which allows them to be creative while they will design it from its conception to completion. While it is important for teachers to understand that they cannot become completely dependent upon technology as a means to enhance their own teaching strategies, when technology is integrated into a teacher’s instructional calendar it can be a tremendous benefit to students in the classroom. They gain a wealth of knowledge and skills  needed.
The effective use of technology in Education has changed the face of education and it has created more educational opportunities. Both teachers and students have benefited from various educational technologies, teachers have learned how to integrate technology in their classrooms and students are getting more interested in learning with technology. The use of technology in educationhas removed educational boundaries, both students and teachers can collaborate in real time using advanced educational technologies.
Technology has helped in the growth of mobile learning and long distance learning. The use of internet technology has enabled teachers to reach students across boarders and also students from developing countries have used internet technology to subscribe for advanced educational courses. Many universities and colleges have embraced online education by creating virtual classrooms. Online education is flexible and affordable, students can attend classrooms during their free time, and they can also have a chance to interact with other students virtually.Recent advancements in educational technologies have yielded positive results in our education sector. This new educational technology is supporting both teaching and learning processes, technology has digitized classrooms through digital learning tools like, computers, iPads, smartphones, smart digital white boards; it has expanded course offerings, it has increased student’s engagement and motivation towards learning.
Technology will be a great asset in the classroom, as a motivational aid and a teaching tool to help students succeed. The realms of technology in the classroom have expanded far beyond mere word processing and basic presentations with images, and technology is now a prime way to motivate students. Now, those same programs used for simple tasks are capable of so much more. For example, instead of merely creating a PowerPoint presentation, teachers can use video games, before used only for children’s entertainment, now can be learning tools instead with a proper introduction. By using technology in this fashion, students can become more engaged in instruction and achieve a more substantive learning experience. As an educator , using technology efficiently in the classroom with presentational purposes, also develop my own activities which bring as much educational information as fun to my class. and the way for greater success in delivering my lessons.
As I continue to reflect I have come to realization that the advantages of using technology in the classroom are many both inside and outside the basic classroom. In the class, on the other hand, I have experienced that the use of technology, when efficiently applied, can bring variety rising motivation and attention in the students and may change attitudes towards learning. The use of presentation tools such as PowerPoint or helps to fulfil this goal. Besides, technology also helps in a good extent to bring information to the students.
My personal observation has showed me that technology is a positive tool in the classroom. It brings advantages in the teaching process both for educators and for learners. Motivation and changes of attitude arise when efficiently employed. However, to reach a good understanding on the use of technology, it is necessary to receive instruction. Furthermore, it is necessary to rethink its use, apply accurate methods, and design new possibilities that better reach the goal of the class, inside and outside the educational room.
Of course, there are some negative effects of technology too but come on, everything comes with merits and demerits. It’s on us how we use any particular thing.
GOD BLESS EVERYONE…

Sports plays a key role in physical, social and emotional health development of a person, as their participation and enthusiasm actively promote his / her full potentials. Through friendly competition, one may showcase his / her talents and did ONE’S best to win.

The embodiment of joy was conspicuous in the faces of our CapSUBurias Graduate school family. This event would have never materialized without the undying support of the GSO officers headed by FO1 Noel Maximo together with the strong driven GSO adviser Prof. Ma. Venus B. Lozada, administrator, professors, and the students.
And as we yell, “CapSU  is the best!”
